Drug Uses
Protonix is a proton pump inhibitor, which inhibits enzymes, regulating gastric acid secretion in the parietal cells of the stomach. Proton is prescribed to adult and elderly patients for:
Prophylaxis and maintenance of healing of erosive esophagitis
Treatment of pathological hypersecretory conditions (including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
Short-term treatment of erosive esophagitis, caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease
Due to a high safety profile, Protonix can be administered to pediatric patients (from 5 years of age and older) with acid reflux disease for short-term treatment of erosive esophagitis.
For regulation of gastric acid secretion, the adults are indicated with 40 mg to 80 mg of Protonix per day. When pediatric doses of Protonix are prescribed, the child's body weight should be taken into account. The maximum recommended dose of antiulcer drug Protonix for children is 40 mg per day.
Missed Dose
If you’ve forgotten to take your usual dose of Protonix, do not take an extra dose of this antiulcer drug if the next dose must be taken soon. Just skip the missed tablet and return to your regular dosing schedule.
More Information
The children or adult patients, who have difficulty with swallowing solid dosage forms, can be administered with oral suspension Protonix instead of oral tablets. Protonix oral suspension should be taken with apple sauce or apple juice.
Storage
Keep Protonix in an original container to protect tablets from moisture and light, and store this antiulcer drug at room temperature not above 25°C.

Warnings
Some patients have been reported to experience acute interstitial nephritis during Protonix application. If case of first symptoms of kidney disorder, the antiulcer agent application should be stopped and a kidney examination to be passed. Few cases of hypomagnesemia development have been reported after one year of Protonix application. If a patient experiences abnormal heart rhythm or seizures during treatment with Protonix, the intake of the antiulcer medicine should be ceased, and a blood test to be passed.
